It seems to have been a problem with the mail queue. It could not resolve addresses, according to the log. I could resolve addresses from the bash command line with "dig". I restarted the server and manually flushed the queue from the web admin interface.
I think Surgemail did not come up properly after a recent power outage. Anyway, seems to be working fine now.
