FAQ
- Which should I use, Local/share, Ftp or WebDav?
- If you want to sync a folder between home/work, then the
WebDav option is best.
- If you just want to sync between several pc's at work, then
syncing to a shared drive would be best.
- If you just want our 'BackInTime' protection then syncing to
a usb or shared network drive is ideal.
- In general the WebDav protocol is more modern and thus
faster and more reliable than the FTP protocol, so where both
are available choose WebDav.
- What is WebDav?
- WebDav is a protocol for file transfers, it's more
modern/robust than FTP, and is layered over the HTTP protocol
(which is what web browsers use). Many providers of
internet 'storage' options will provide 'Webdav' access as one
option. Although be warned some of them have not
implemented it correctly, we will compile a list of known good
or faulty providers below. But for best results use our
'ISyncU server' and run your own bit of cloud :-)
- How does the BackInTime feature work?
- When a file is going to be replaced or deleted the 'old'
version of the file is moved to the .backintime directory
structure, into a sub folder based on the current
date/hour. After a period of a few weeks duplicate files
on the same day are removed and only one file is kept per
day. In windows explorer you can 'search' the
.backintime folder to find all occurances of a file you wish
to restore, once you have identified the one you want simply
copy it over the existing file.
